Preventing Skin Cancer

January 17, 2011 by No Comments »
Skin cancer is a type of cancer that is dominant in our society. It may seem as if anyone can be struck by this cancer, and that is true. However, there are things that a person can do to lessen their chances of developing skin cancer, and these are things that should already be in practice in order to ensure the overall health of your skin. Unfortunately, many people do not heed warnings.
The first thing to do is to use sunscreen. This is something that is preached constantly, but sadly enough not many people listen. Most people have the idea that they will not get skin cancer because they have been healthy their entire lives. But, skin cancer does not care about your health, and your immune system. This is why everyone should utilize sunscreen of at least 15 SPF. For those that are fair skinned and light haired, then a higher SPF will be needed. You do not want to turn even slightly red, as this shows that you do have sun damage, which is the leading cause of skin cancer.
In addition, you should avoid spending excessive amounts of time in the sun when it is at its brightest and harshest, which is around the middle of the day. If you must be out during this time try to stick to the shade as much as possible, and remember to reapply that sun screen if you begin to sweat profusely or if you have been in the water, even if the sunscreen claims to be waterproof, the protection that the lotion offers will diminish over time.
Wearing hats that have wide brims are an excellent way to protect your face, which is some of the most sensitive skin on your body. Remember that by taking a little precautions now, you can save yourself years of pain and unsightly skin damage that you will regret.
